BigBlueButton

BigBlueButton is a strong candidate for interactive teaching and professional training when you want control over the deployment. The software licence is free, but reliable hosting, capacity planning and support still need a budget and an owner.

Honest Limitations

Hosting remains a real project

Self-hosting requires a dedicated server and ongoing technical work. The current installation guide specifies a clean supported Ubuntu system, substantial RAM and CPU, and appropriate network capacity.

Capacity depends on the deployment

A generic participant maximum would conceal the effects of server resources, webcams, concurrent rooms and recording. Test the planned workload or obtain a provider commitment.

The classroom is one part of the event

Budget separately for event promotion, commercial registration and the surrounding programme workflow when they are needed.

Open-source software Free licence Distributed under LGPL-3.0. Licence availability does not include a production server, bandwidth or operator support.
Self-hosted deployment Infrastructure and operating costs vary Budget server resources, recording storage, bandwidth, monitoring, upgrades and staff time.
Managed hosting Provider quote Commercial hosting providers set their own participant limits, service commitments and contracts.

Hidden Costs to Watch

  • ! Recording retention increases storage requirements.
  • ! Technical maintenance, security updates and capacity testing require time or a service contract.
  • ! Software licensing and permission to use the BigBlueButton trademark are separate matters.

BigBlueButton is organised around teaching: the presenter can explain, poll the room, annotate together and send learners into smaller discussions. That makes it relevant to business training as well as formal education.

Treat the deployment as part of the purchase decision. A managed provider may take on much of the work, while a self-hosted installation gives your organisation responsibility for infrastructure, maintenance and live-session resilience.
