QLab

QLab earns a place on the shortlist when one operator needs to run a carefully programmed sequence across several technical departments. A free workspace can establish the cue structure, then licences add the required audio, video or lighting scope. Its flexibility rewards preparation: a dependable show file includes tested routing, clear cue logic and a rehearsed backup computer.

Best For
  • + Theatre and event operators coordinating audio, projection and lighting cues
  • + Designers building reusable show files with deliberate triggers and timing
  • + Mac-based production teams that want daily rentals for occasional paid-feature use
Not For
  • − Production teams that must run the main application on Windows
  • − Buyers assuming all multichannel, projection and external-control features are free
  • − Operators expecting a complex multi-department show to run safely without cue programming and rehearsal
Key Capabilities
✓ Build and organise audio, video and lighting cues in a show workspace
✓ Use unlimited cue lists with the free core feature set
✓ Add advanced multichannel audio, routing and effects through an Audio licence
✓ Add multi-screen output, masking and edge blending through a Video licence
✓ Expand beyond the free 16-address DMX patch with a Lighting licence
✓ Unlock MIDI, networking, scripting and workflow controls with any paid licence
✓ Activate standard or rental licences on two computers and run without internet
Honest Limitations

The main application requires a Mac

QLab’s official distribution is for macOS. Include suitable Macs and audio/video interfaces in the budget; software capacity does not establish how many simultaneous high-resolution outputs a particular machine can sustain.

Paid features follow the licence type

Any paid licence unlocks general show-control features, but advanced audio, video and lighting functions still follow their corresponding licence. Check the complete cue file against the feature matrix before the show.

Rental dates are calendar dates

A one-day rental ends at midnight on its chosen date, not 24 hours after purchase. Include preparation, overnight operation and the full event window; the official store uses the computer’s time zone.

Broad control can be more than a small job needs

Gordon F., a non-incentivized Capterra reviewer in August 2017, liked live audio cues but found the cost and breadth excessive for lower-budget uses. Treat that as historical fit feedback; current prices and free features must come from the official store.

Pricing Breakdown

Hidden Costs to Watch

  • ! Budget Macs, audio interfaces, video output hardware and any external control equipment.
  • ! A newer major version may require an upgrade purchase; QLab 5 perpetual use is not a promise of free future major versions.
  • ! Confirm taxes and feature selections in the store; no obsolete directory prices are substituted.
